Eureka Boss Smart-Vac Vacuum Cleaner Review

Eureka Boss Smart-Vac ReviewThe Eureka Boss Smart-Vac Upright HEPA Vacuum Cleaner is a powerhouse of a vacuum. That’s why I bought it.As I get older, I get really tired of following around my vacuum cleaner, picking up after it. So in researching vacuums, I really wanted one that offered powerful performance over just about anything else. And because I have pets and I’m asthmatic, getting after all that fur is especially important. A truly spring-clean home really requires a vacuum that’s both powerful and has flexible tools. And I’m all about the spring cleaning, baby. :)Perhaps you’re like me: you have allergies and you have pets. There’s constant pet hair tumbleweeding across your hardwood floors and pet hair in your carpets. Finding a vacuum that can suck up all that pet hair yet doesn’t clog up after the first use is a challenge. And it’s doubly important that the vac doesn’t spew dust and allergens back into our homes as it cleans. This vacuum might be a great choice for you – it’s nicely priced and has a lot of features for pet owners and those with allergies. But like with anything, there’s always details to consider – so read on for the important details that I learned in using this vacuum. Table of Contents

My Experience

I bought this vacuum after hours of agonizing over all the choices. I have pets, hardwood floors, and carpets. Plus, we (hubby and I) are prone to allergies and asthma. I even have a cat who is allergic to dust. The reason I needed another vacuum was because my “daily driver” of a vac (the Hoover Linx) died. And while that little cordless vac was/is great, I really needed a heavy-duty vacuum for spring cleaning purposes.I ordered it on Amazon on Monday and it was at my house on Wednesday, it shipped free. The box was in excellent condition, and it only took a few minutes to assemble. There are three screws that you have to screw in with a basic Phillips head screwdriver (it’s not included). In the box: the Eureka vacuum in two parts (handle and the rest of the vac), and a baggie with 2 vacuum bags, the manual, warranty info, and a spare belt. Here’s a picture of what was in the box, besides the vacuum:

This vacuum is serious. Seriously serious. It’s by far the largest vac I own (and to date, I own five of them). Here’s a couple of visual comparisons for you:

So in my 1100 square foot home, it took me about 45 minutes to vacuum all surfaces, high and low. I don’t have stairs, but my home is old (1940s), so I have lots of crevices in the corners of the hardwood floors. I used the attachment hose without a head to suck up things like cat litter and fur out of little corners of the house. It was a dream to use in these cracks. What was most surprising was how well this large vacuum gets underneath low-profile furniture. Here it is getting under a shelving unit in my living room that’s just under inches high:

All in all, I love this spring cleaning sized vacuum. I don’t pull it out every day, but I use it weekly for deep cleaning.

Vacuuming Pet Fur and Long Hair

How is the Eureka Boss Smart-Vac at cleaning pet fur and long hair? It has something called a “Power Paw” brush that is designed to get up pet hair from carpets – even when it’s buried deep in there. The Power Paw is essentially a small vacuum that attaches to your hose/wand. It’s used for cleaning stairs, furniture, etc. It works better for picking up hair than a regular brush because it has a rotating bar in the unit instead of just sucking it up. Many people just use this attachment for cleaning items such as pet beds, as it is easy to clean. I love the power of this vacuum and there are no serious reports of it having trouble with pet hair.

Cleaning Stairs

How is this Eureka Boss Smart-Vac at cleaning stairs? While I was unable to test this personally, Eureka recommends using the attachments for cleaning stairs. You don’t use the machine itself on stairs because the rollers retract if the machine is in it’s upright position. And most stairs are too narrow  for hoisting this large machine onto anyway. That’s where the Power Paw also comes into play on this machine – it’s like a tiny vacuum itself, so that’s what you use on stairs.  The hose length is rather short though, so if you have a lot of stairs that you want to vacuum often, you may want a hand-vac instead. This vacuum is so heavy-duty that I’m not sure I’d depend on it for the delicate task of stairs.

Vacuum Bags and Filtration

Eureka Boss Smart-Vac Bag

The Eureka Boss Smart-Vac is a little old-school – it uses bags, which will need to be changed. Some people prefer bags over bagless because there’s dust and mess generated when emptying bins – especially hard on those with allergies and asthma. With the Eureka Boss, it’s a bit easier to do than with those that have a soft exterior – you just open the side where the bag is and take it off to unload whatever is vacuumed and put it back right in place.
Eureka Boss Smart-Vac sealed HEPA Filtration
The HEPA filter on the Eureka Boss is sealed and so it filters out almost everything.
The Eureka Boss Smart-Vac has a  sealed, HEPA filtration system that captures 99.97 percent of dust, pollen, allergens, and bacteria. OK then! There’s rubber gaskets that seal the bag compartment and the HEPA filter. There’s also a filter that goes over the motor vent, so there’s three stages of filtration. You can get inexpensive generic replacement bags or Eureka brand bags. And 3M makes Filtrete bags and HEPA filters that fit the Eureka Boss too.

Carpeting and Hardwood Floor Performance

Moving from hardwood to carpet and back is done by toggling a switch on the front of the vacuum head. I found that it was pretty easy to do as long as I didn’t have house slippers on! There’s also a fine level of setting for carpet height. The brush was designed to work on even thick, shaggy rugs without getting the brush suck. The toggling action can be a bit clunky. When you go from carpet to hardwood, you’ll need to rock the machine back so the wheels have no pressure on them. Then, you push the foot pedal until you hear it click into place before moving on to the hardwood floor. The suction on this vac is so intense that it will pull you along the carpet when the brushes are engaged. It’s really powerful.

On Board Tools, Hose and Cord

The on board tools are stored on the machine, and it comes with a nested extension wand, a crevice tool and a dusting brush. It also comes with the Power Paw, which is an attachment with a rotating brush, like a vacuum head. One of the nice features of the Eureka Boss Smart-Vac is that the hose is connected deep down into the body of the machine. This makes the center of gravity such that it will pull along behind you without tipping over, almost like having a canister vacuum. The hose length is fairly short, but you can purchase another one from Eureka directly and add it on.The cord is 30 feet long and is wound manually. I love this length, because I only have to change plugs once when I vacuum. :) There’s a clip on the vac to keep it out of your way while vacuuming, which is a nice feature for those of us who tend to get tangle in it and run it over. With all this suction, you’ll want to prevent running over the cord!

Customer Reviews and Ratings

Because I have some special needs (allergies and pets), I spent a lot of time – hours – researching a heavy-duty vacuum. Every one of them has it’s pros and cons, as you well know.  – to the point of feeling like you could just give up and hire a housekeeper instead. The Eureka Boss Smart-Vac has over 790 reviews and most are positive. Those who like this vacuum like it for it’s main purpose: suction power. One person said it could suck up a mouse! (Poor mouse!) :) And I’d agree – this vacuum is excellent at sucking up all the dust, fur, cat litter and hair you can manage to generate. Most of those who didn’t like it mentioned one of three things:1. It’s heavy. I agree. This is a heavy-duty vacuum that will suck the paint off the walls if you want.2. To some, the materials seem cheap and lightweight. I’m actually glad that the manufacturer made this design decision – if it were made of steel it would be impossible to push.3. The foot pedal can be problematic for some. You have to step both down and out on it at the same time while gently pivoting the top handle down and it is difficult to do. If you put too much pressure on the upper body while doing the release it can break the plastic base housing where the top assembly pivots. So be mindful of the pedal and be gentle with it. It also may be a reflection of some older models – mine (bought in January 2014) seems fine and sturdy. But I’ll keep an eye on it and report any new findings here.

Pros

  • Powerful suction makes it ideal for pet fur and hair
  • Rubber sealed HEPA filter so no dust escapes back into your home
  • Ability to get under low profile furniture
  • Long Cord so it makes the whole process faster
  • Power Paw is easy to get to since it’s mounted on the front
  • Extra hook on handle for hooking cord so you don’t run over it

Cons

  • It’s heavy
  • The headlight is a bit dim
  • The sticker on the front of the vac doesn’t come off

Eureka Boss Smart-Vac Price

The price is very reasonable at about $150. Amazon sometimes has it on sale and so I got mine for less than that.I compared other vacuums of this size and with the fully sealed HEPA filter and the Eureka Boss Smart-Vac came up as the winner. This was the lowest priced vacuum with a sealed HEPA filter and a super long cord, so because of that, the Eureka Boss Smart-Vac was the best buy in this category for me.

My Overall Review

After hours of research and testing, I can say that I love the Eureka Boss Smart-Vac. Even given it’s few flaws, such as being heavy, it works for me and my allergies and pets. Anyone who wants a heavy-duty vacuum that has serious suction and can handle pet hair with ease should take a serious look at this serious vacuum. If you have any questions about the Eureka Boss Smart-Vac, you can always contact me by using the social icons in the sidebar – I’m almost always online. :)I also found a great video for you for after you buy it and need to do a bit of maintenance – this guy basically does a tune up on this model of vacuum. He says his wife loves it. It’s a good way to see the interior bits and pieces of this vacuum:
